The word is out! The third annual WA Spring Poetry Festival

State Library of WA & The Glasshouse Northbridge

Saturday 13th – Sunday 21st October

This year the festival features two weekends of readings, workshops, panel discussions & book launches in the State Library. Seven nights of poetry/music & launch of magazine #3 in The Glasshouse, Brass Monkey Hotel, Northbridge. Festival includes Regional WA Events.

Already the word is out! The festival boasts of some of Australia’s well-known poets, including Patron Fay Zwicky, winner of the Patrick White Award 2005.

Dorothy Porter, noted for her crime thrillers such as The Monkey’s Mask (film), and El Dorado (2007) will present a talk, reading & book signing in the State Library Theatre.

There is a stellar line-up of poets from afar such as Alvin Pang (Singapore) and Samuel Wagan Watson (Queensland). Local Oz-Sudanese poet, Afeif Abdelrazig will read at a special Multicultural Night at The Glasshouse. The festival is about difference, inclusive of all peoples, no matter what race, religion or sex.

Come along this Spring and meet West Australian poets such as Glen Phillips, Andrew Burke, Barbara Temperton (Geraldton), Shane McCauley, Zan Ross, newly published poet Sarah French and more….

New & seasoned wordsmiths can join in the fun of the festival in open mic readings. National Poetry Slam WA organizer, alan boyd (aka/anti-poet) says he is making this year’s festival “radical”. The final heat of the state slam will take place at PICA on Friday, 19th October. Back by popular demand are all forms of poetry for everyone to enjoy, from the lyric to bush poetry, rap/hip hop, music, indigenous story & song, multicultural poetry & performance poetry.

Poems will hang on trees in the Murray St. Mall. City of Perth Poetrees readers will entertain lunch time crowds in the city with the spoken word. Event starts at midday on Monday 15th – Thursday 18th October.

Full program details now available on the WA Poets Inc. website by following the festival links http://www.thewordisout.net.au

Poets who can help distribute attached flyer to all know sources will greatly assist the success of the festival.

Creative Connections Project

We are looking for people to become part of an exciting project: the Creative Connections Art and Poetry Exhibition. Please read the information about the project and fill out the ‘Interest Form’. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, no matter how big or small.

Art and poetry are important ways for people to express themselves creatively and we want to give differently-abled and abled artists and poets the opportunity to do this and connect with the community and each other!

CREATIVE CONNECTIONS ART AND POETRY EXHIBITION

This project came about after a group of community members and disability workers discussed the idea in 2006.

The aims of the project are:

* to demonstrate through creative pursuits, the diverse abilities and personalities of people who are differently-abled
* to enable differently-abled people, the community and community groups to connect with each other

The exhibition consists of:

* artworks created by differently-abled artists (mainly DSC hostel residents and clients)
* poems written to the artworks by local poets
* profiles and photos of the artists.

These are exhibited publicly and artworks and poems are for sale together. Creative Connections is a not for profit group.

2008 CREATIVE CONNECTIONS ART AND POETRY EXHIBITION

We are currently looking for volunteers to help with the 2008 exhibition.

We need a team consisting of:

at least one photographer

at least one framer

at least two artistically creative, reliable people to work with the artists, alongside DSC workers

at least two or three administration people (includes finance, computer work, publicity, etc.)

at least one or two people for the poetry team.

After the success of the 2007 exhibition, we believe we can make the next exhibition even better.

This will depend on the formation of a team to make it happen.

2007 CREATIVE CONNECTIONS ART AND POETRY EXHIBITION

The 2007 exhibition ran from Thursday 3rd May to Sunday 6th May (a special trading day) at Centro Warwick Shopping Centre. Altogether there were: 29 Artworks by 26 Artists and 66 Poems by 17 Poets, and 18 of the artworks and the accompanying poems were sold. Some of the positives that came from the exhibition were:

* positive feedback about the combination of artworks, poetry and profiles
* positive public interaction, and bringing understanding, awareness and connection with artists, poets, community individuals and community groups
* rewarding for all concerned – acknowledgement and appreciation of the diverse abilities and personalities of the artists through their artworks and the accompanying poetry
* financial rewards for the artists
* positive outcome for DSC workers.

MOVIE FUNDRAISER REVIEW

Firstly, we wish to thank the mammoth efforts of poets, friends, families and movie-buffs who attended the movie night. It was wonderful to see smiling faces, to meet new members and to catch up with those poets who we now know on a more intimate basis. The success of the movie fundraiser goes to those who sold tickets, purchased tickets or simply donated towards the night. We raised approx. $1,500, championing the call to help publish our Word is Out Journal. Your participatory efforts now ensures the publication of Issue #3 - ready for the Spring Poetry Festival in October with a special launch night to take place at The Glasshouse (Brass Monkey), Friday 19th October.

For those of you who missed the film, for one reason or another, you missed an electric night of fun and camaraderie, everyone mingling, joking and chatting in the upstairs foyer of the Astor Theatre. It was indeed a literary first for WA Poets, a fun social event where the purpose to publish and fundraise was lost in the ether of ‘giving’. It all came from the heart, everyone purchasing raffle tickets, going for the big prize of the Italian Gourmet basket. Not only did our large group enjoy the atmosphere, but they had a choice of buffet food, nibbles, champagne and orange juice. The night was abuzz with helpers. Flora Smith in her usual poetic charm, cruising the crowd with raffle tickets, Coral Carter (& her son) at the drinks table, and Rosie Barter & Raechal Petridis on the raffle. At the end of the night we had one small raffle stub left, raising over $239 - a marvellous effort by you all. The success of the night was way beyond our expectations, and although only 85 tickets were handed in at the theatre, we actually sold 121 tickets. The irony of the fundraiser night meant that ‘you’ – the 36 missing people actually contributed 100%. Where were you all?

A special thankyou must go to Maggie Van Putten who vouchsafed the initial purchase of 20 tickets to get the movie night on the road. A super thankyou to the following people who are gems in our literary community: to Coral Carter who donated the champagne, and poured for everyone on the night. A lady who simply says, ‘I can do that’. To Flora Smith, rousing-up a gourmet basket and contents, for selling tickets, and for her matter of fact ‘let’s do it, it’s no trouble.’ To Rosie Barter, for her raffle & hat signage, selling and help on the night. Rosie, a new found gem and helper, says ‘it’s okay, but one day I’ll give up fundraising and write poetry.’ To Rachael Petridis, Lucas North, Coral’s son and to all of you who bought or attended the film night – a big thank you! The Word is Out Journal #3 will be published raising the level of publication for poets in WA. But this is already happening! So this is where I give a special mention and thanks to Donna Ward who gave generously towards the fundraiser. Donna is now the tireless Managing Editor of the new literary journal Indigo. She understands publishing and a special credit must go to her for WAPI’s idea for the film night. We simply copied, but did not have to research. Thank you Donna for your successful, innovative idea!

Last but not least, we thank the following organizations and people: to the Astor Cinema, especially Tania (Manager) for her easygoing help, to the Fremantle Press who donated (as raffle prize) three poetry books from Graeme Miles, Mark Reid and Dennis Haskell. To the following poets for their generous donations, Joyce Parkes, Sally Clarke, Jan Napier, Jacqui Stewart, Frank Hawkins, Sandra McAlpine and Peter Evans, thank you!

We hope you enjoyed the film ‘Amazing Grace’. It was a wonderful film, especially since the story highlighted a history that sometimes goes unnoticed. William Wilberforce worked for the good of all people, and you movie buffs can take credit for doing the same.

Bio: Janet says: "Since 1986 I have sculpted in English, seeking
poems that work whether declaimed loudly or whispered in the mind.
Never a closet poet, I have always written with an audience in mind, and
I like to recite to audiences wherever I find myself (mostly in Perth,
Western Australia). I try to write poems that will be appreciated by
people both inside and outside literary circles."

Janet will be an invited guest at the Overload poetry festival in Melbourne in August and looking for a publisher for her next collection.
