Rock Against Racism - Friday 13th July at City Farm Perth

Love Music, Hate Racism?

Get up and ROCK AGAINST RACISM!

On FRIDAY 13th JULY a diverse bunch of bands, artists and DJs including CURSE OV DIALECT (Vic), COMBAT WOMBAT'S ELF TRANZPORTER and DJ WASABI, THE TIGERS, RYTHM INFINIT and DJ MISSILE and many more will perform at the FREE, ALL AGES ROCK AGAINST RACISM concert, from 4pm, at City Farm, East Perth - as part of the Students of Sustainability Conference 2007.

Rock Against Racism aims to bring together a culturally diverse range of people from the local and national community to facilitate cross-cultural harmony and promote zero tolerance towards racism.

The event is all-ages and aims to be as inclusive and welcoming to young people as possible, with a special commitment to creating a safe, drug and alcohol free space. A diversity of cultural representation will make the event particularly welcoming to young people from all backgrounds.

Rock Against Racism will also engage with over five hundred participants from the Students of Sustainability conference, which gathers youth and students from all over Australia and the Asia-Pacific to participate in social justice and environmental works.

The Rock Against Racism organising collective feel that it is incredibly important to promote cultural acceptance amongst young people, as they form their notions of Australian cultural identity. The organising collective recognises that racism can only be tackled through events that promote tolerance, diversity, and community, and hope that this event will have a lasting effect on young people's concepts of their community and how it could be.

Rock Against Racism emerged in 1976 in the UK in response to allegedly racist comments and gestures made by David Bowie and Eric Clapton. It was first conceived as an idea for a one-off concert against the rise of racism but has grown immensely since, with hundreds of RAR events held in affinity actions across the globe every year.

Ultimately if we wish to create a fair and just Australia, we need to recognise that young people have the potential to remap the cultural identity of Australia to a more equitable and harmonious nation.

Everyone is welcome to come down to City Farm on Friday July 13th from 4pm
onwards and ROCK AGAINST RACISM!

WA Government blacklisted as heritage vandals - again! READ MORE...

FARA urge all friends to write an email this week to the decision makers below expressing their personal disgust that Woodside and the WA government have allowed the Burrup to be re-listed on the World Monument Fund's Most Endangered Sites List for the 6th year running!! This is the third time the Burrup has been listed (biennial listing) and is the only Australian site ever nominated! Not something to be proud of! It is a shameful list for Australia to be part of and one that the WA Government and Woodside are ultimately responsible for! Stand up for the Burrup!

Hitching to SoS

Can't afford the mission to Perth? Before you spend loads o' dosh on train tickets or fuck the climate through flights to Perth, consider the oft-forgotten art of hitchhiking.

Hitchhiking is an official transport option to get to Students of Sustainability 2007 (well.... we say so, anyhoo). Hitchhiking is free, carbon-friendly, fun and adventurous but not altogether stupid, and it doesn't fuel wars for oil.

We've tried to compile a few tips and ideas to support peeps in hitching across da Nullarbor. You can view the Wiki made up for the challenge at: Hitchhiker's_Guide_to_the_Nullarbor

It's still under construction, so please press the 'edit' button and fill in the blanks, such as offering places to stay for hitchhikers along the route or telling us how to get to the highway from your city. But most of all, fill in the bit that says that YOU are going to hitch there!

Big ups to da Green Geeks in Sydders who have donated a DIY solar backpack kit for the winner of the hitchiking challenge. See ya on the road!

Please send this along to anyone keen on comin' to SoS.
