From the newswire: SEP 15 2008 - Premier-elect Colin Barnett has earmarked royalties from potential WA uranium mining projects to fund his election-winning deal with the Nationals. Barnett will be sworn in as WA's 29th premier later this week - paving the way for uranium mining and genetically modified crops in this state...
WA is expected to experience a "uranium drilling frenzy" following the appointment of the new government. Mr Barnett says he expects to see a uranium mine operating in WA within 3-5 years.
Uranium is found right across WA, from the Kimberley to the Goldfields. The heaviest concentrations are found around the large Yeelirrie deposit in the mid-west.
Kintyre near the Rudall National Park in the Pilbara is one of the world's biggest undeveloped uranium deposits. The Kintyre lease lies on the park's northern edge, inside an area cut from the park in 1993. (ANAWA)
WA has as much as 10 percent of the world's known uranium reserves, worth about $40 billion. The Liberals plan to open the state, which accounts for more than a third of the nation's exports, to uranium miners such as Cameco, the world's biggest producer and BHP Billiton.
